Labels Are Easy

Tonight I went down to CDIS with Josh, because he had his computer literacy test. While he wrote the test, I sat in the eCafe and did some people-watching. I know that it's wrong to label people by how they look, but I had nothing better to do, and it wasn't as though I was being (overly) malicious. I didn't know the personalities of these people, but from appearances I came to the conclusion that everyone fit into three visual categories:

1. Typical Computer Nerd (Male Only)- You know the stereotypes about pasty white guys who look as though they rarely shower and wear Star Wars t-shirts. CDIS appears to be mecca for these guys, and I suppose that the advertisment for a "Jedi Tournament" was geared in their direction.

2. Trendy Girls- Of the few girls there, about a third of them looked as though they copied their outfit from the latest issue of Seventeen. Of these trendy girls, about half would be considered tanorexic. Hopefully they were just in the eCafe waiting for someone, because if I have classes with any of the Britney Spears wannabes, I will look like the Pillsbury Doughboy in comparison (ie: white and chubby).

3. Emo kids- It appeared that anyone who wasn't a computer nerd or trendwhore was dressed like a typical emo kid. Somehow, I never associated stereotypical emo kids with computers. I always thought that any guy dressed like the lead singer from Weezer just sat in his room with his guitar and sweaters and cried all day. Maybe in between the crying jags, these guys learned to use computers? Come to think of it, iMacs are bright and colourful and easy to customise with stickers. Sounds stereotypically emo to me.
